Choosing the wrong rubber sheet compound for a chemical environment is one of the most common — and expensive — engineering mistakes. This chemical resistance guide for rubber sheet covers the five standard compounds (SBR, EPDM, neoprene, nitrile, natural rubber) against the most common industrial chemicals encountered in UK engineering, food processing, marine, and laboratory applications.
How to Use This Rubber Sheet Chemical Resistance Guide
Ratings are given as: E = Excellent (no significant effect, suitable for continuous contact), G = Good (minor effect, suitable for intermittent contact), F = Fair (moderate effect, test before specifying), P = Poor (significant degradation — do not use). Always test in your specific environment before permanent installation. Temperature significantly affects chemical resistance — ratings below assume ambient temperature (20–25°C).

Quick Compound Selection Guide
- Oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid present → Nitrile (NBR)
- Outdoor, UV, weather, water → EPDM
- Steam, hot water → EPDM
- Marine, refrigerants, mixed oil + weather → Neoprene
- General indoor, abrasion, acids/alkalis → EPDM or SBR
- High flex, food grade (specific), aqueous acid → Natural Rubber
- Aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents → None of the above (specify Viton® FKM)
When None of the Standard Compounds Work
For aggressive chemical environments — concentrated acids, aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, xylene), chlorinated solvents, or high-temperature oil applications — none of the five standard compounds may be adequate. In these cases, the correct specification is typically Viton® (FKM — Fluoroelastomer), which offers exceptional broad-spectrum chemical resistance across the widest temperature range of any elastomer (−20°C to +200°C). Viton® sheet is available as a special order — contact our technical team with your application details.
How to Test Rubber Sheet Chemical Resistance
Before committing to a large order for a critical application: cut a small sample of the specified rubber sheet compound, weigh it dry, immerse in the actual chemical fluid at the service temperature for 72 hours, remove and weigh again. Weight gain of <5% indicates good resistance; 5–20% fair resistance; >20% or visible swelling, softening, or disintegration indicates the compound is unsuitable.
