When standard rubber sheet doesn't have enough tensile strength or tear resistance for your application — high-pressure gaskets, conveyor scraper blades, or sheet that will be subjected to bolt clamping — insertion rubber sheet is the correct specification. This guide explains what insertion rubber sheet is, when to use it, and how it compares to standard rubber sheet for UK engineering applications.
What is Insertion Rubber Sheet?
Insertion rubber sheet is rubber sheet reinforced with one or more plies of woven fabric (typically cotton or polyester) embedded within the rubber matrix. The fabric "insertion" dramatically increases the tensile strength, tear resistance, and dimensional stability of the sheet compared to unreinforced rubber — while retaining the sealing, chemical resistance, and elasticity properties of the base compound. Insertion vs Standard Rubber Sheet: Key Differences
| Property | Standard Rubber Sheet | Insertion Rubber Sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 8–14 MPa | 15–25 MPa (fabric reinforced) |
| Tear Resistance | Moderate | High |
| Dimensional Stability | Moderate (stretches under bolt load) | High (fabric resists extrusion) |
| Compressibility | High (good sealing conformance) | Lower (stiffer, less conformable) |
| Cut-to-shape ease | Easy | Harder — fabric resists cutting |
| Best for | Conformable seals, light gaskets | High-pressure flanges, heavy gaskets, scraper blades |
When to Specify Insertion Rubber Sheet
High-Pressure Flange Gaskets
Standard rubber sheet tends to extrude and creep under heavy bolt clamping loads — particularly on larger diameter flanges where bolt spacing creates uneven pressure distribution. Insertion sheet's fabric reinforcement resists this extrusion and maintains the gasket in position under sustained bolt load. Specify insertion rubber for flanges above 10 bar or larger than DN150 diameter.
Conveyor and Process Equipment Scrapers
Conveyor belt scrapers, tank scraper blades, and doctor blades cut from rubber sheet require tear resistance — particularly at the blade tip. Standard rubber tears and wears quickly in this application; insertion sheet's reinforcement prevents propagation of tears from the blade edge.
Vibration Isolation Pads with Point Loading
Where vibration isolation pads are subject to bolt-through fixings or concentrated point loads (machinery feet, anchor bolts passing through the pad), insertion rubber resists tearing at the bolt hole — standard rubber can split from the fixing point under dynamic load.
Expansion Joint Filling
Rubber sheet used to fill and seal expansion joints in concrete floors, bridge decks, and building facades requires dimensional stability — the sheet must not flow or creep over time under compression. Insertion rubber's fabric layer provides the necessary dimensional stability under sustained compressive load.
Insertion Rubber Sheet Compounds Available
Insertion rubber sheet is available in the same compound range as standard sheet. The fabric reinforcement is compatible with all standard vulcanised rubber compounds:
- SBR Insertion: General purpose indoor gaskets, scrapers, expansion joints — most common and cost-effective
- EPDM Insertion: Outdoor seals, water system gaskets, steam applications
- Neoprene Insertion: Marine seals, HVAC expansion joints, applications requiring oil + weather resistance
- Nitrile Insertion: Oil-resistant high-pressure gaskets, hydraulic system flanges in engineered pipework
How to Cut Insertion Rubber Sheet
The fabric reinforcement makes insertion rubber significantly harder to cut than standard sheet. Use a sharp heavy-duty utility knife with a new blade, and cut away from the insertion lines (parallel to the fabric weave direction gives cleaner cuts than across it). For circular gaskets, a gasket punch set combined with a hydraulic arbour press gives the cleanest results. Power tools (jigsaw with metal-cutting blade) work well for 6mm+ insertion sheet.
Prices and Availability UK 2025
Insertion rubber sheet (SBR base compound, single-ply cotton insertion) is typically 20–30% more expensive than equivalent standard SBR sheet.
