Frequently Asked Questions
What thickness for workbench tops?
3-6mm is typical for workbench coverings, providing cushioning without excessive softness. For heavy component handling, consider 8-10mm.
Can I cut gaskets from rubber sheeting?
Yes, this is a primary use. Mark your pattern and cut with sharp knife or gasket cutter. For complex shapes or production quantities, we offer laser cutting services.
Which compound for hydraulic applications?
Nitrile (NBR) for mineral oils and hydraulic fluids. For phosphate ester fluids, EPDM is required. Always check fluid compatibility before specifying.
Is food-grade rubber sheeting available?
Yes, we stock FDA-approved and EU 1935/2004 compliant rubber for food contact applications. White silicone and special EPDM compounds available.
What about electrical insulation properties?
Standard rubber provides basic insulation. For switchboard matting and certified electrical safety applications, specify BS EN 61111 approved grades with test certificates.
Can industrial rubber sheeting be bonded?
Yes, using appropriate adhesives for the compound type. Contact cements work for most rubbers. Silicone requires specialist silicone adhesives. Surface preparation improves bond strength.
Do you supply in small quantities?
Yes, we offer cut pieces from 0.5m² upwards for sampling and small projects. No minimum order on standard compounds.
What shelf life does rubber sheeting have?
Properly stored (cool, dark, away from ozone sources), quality rubber sheeting maintains properties for 5+ years. Natural rubber degrades faster than synthetic compounds.

Which industrial rubber sheeting compound is best for chemical resistance?
Compound selection depends on the specific chemicals present. EPDM provides excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, ketones, and steam. Nitrile (NBR) provides excellent resistance to mineral oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids but poor resistance to aromatic solvents. Neoprene provides moderate oil resistance combined with better weather and ozone resistance. For aggressive chemical environments, always verify compatibility with the specific chemical using the compound manufacturer's chemical resistance data.
Can industrial rubber sheeting be used for bund lining?
Yes. Both EPDM and nitrile rubber sheeting are commonly used for secondary containment bund lining. The Environment Agency's PPG 2 guidance requires bund liners to be chemically compatible with the stored liquid. For petroleum products and fuels: nitrile rubber sheet minimum 3mm. For water-based chemicals and general containment: EPDM rubber sheet. All joints must be overlapped minimum 50mm and bonded with appropriate adhesive.
How is industrial rubber sheeting cut?
For sheets up to 6mm: sharp Stanley knife with fresh blade against a steel straight edge — score firmly and fold to snap cleanly. For 6mm-15mm: jigsaw with rubber-cutting blade or bandsaw gives cleanest cuts. For 15mm+: bandsaw or waterjet cutting. For gasket production: steel-rule die cutting is most accurate for high volumes. For profiled cuts (circles, complex shapes): waterjet cutting provides the cleanest finish. Always allow rubber to acclimatise to room temperature before cutting.

Industrial Rubber Sheeting UK — Compound & Application Guide
Industrial rubber sheet specification requires understanding both the chemical environment and the mechanical requirements of the application. The wrong compound choice leads to premature failure; the right compound choice provides 8-15 years of reliable service.
Five Main Compounds — Quick Reference
SBR (general purpose): ~60% of all UK rubber sheet. Excellent abrasion resistance, good water resistance. AVOID in oil, fuel, or UV exposure. For general gaskets, water-contact liners, and indoor surface protection.
EPDM (outdoor/chemical): UV and ozone stable, excellent acid/alkali resistance, wide temperature range (-50°C to +130°C). AVOID in petroleum oil contact. For outdoor bund lining, steam gaskets, roof walkway protection, pool surrounds.
Nitrile NBR (oil specialist): The only correct compound for petroleum oil, diesel, hydraulic fluid, and fuel contact. AVOID in strong acids or aromatic solvents. For workshop floor matting, bund liners for fuel storage, hydraulic system gaskets.
Neoprene (balanced): Moderate oil resistance + good weather/UV resistance. Fire-retardant (self-extinguishing). For marine gaskets, bridge bearing pads, rail fire-safety applications.
Silicone (extreme temperature): Widest temperature range (-60°C to +230°C). FDA food contact approved. Physiologically inert. For food contact gaskets, high-temperature oven seals, medical device applications.

Industrial Rubber Sheeting — Sector Applications
Bund Lining
The Environment Agency's PPG 2 requires bund liners to be chemically compatible with the stored liquid. For petroleum products: nitrile rubber sheet minimum 3mm, joints overlapped 50mm and bonded with nitrile-compatible adhesive. For water-based chemicals and general containment: EPDM rubber sheet. For aggressive chemicals: verify compound compatibility with specific chemical before specifying.
Food Production Gaskets
Food contact gaskets require FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 or EC Regulation 1935/2004 compliance. Standard industrial rubber sheet compounds (including black SBR) are not food approved. Food-grade EPDM and nitrile compounds are available — specify food-grade status at time of order. Rubbermatting Direct provides food contact compliance documentation for HACCP records.
Anti-Vibration Isolation
Rubber sheet under machinery bases reduces vibration transmission to building structure. For meaningful isolation, the natural frequency of the rubber-machine system must be substantially lower than the disturbing frequency. Typical industrial machinery (1,000-3,000 rpm): 10-25mm natural rubber or EPDM sheet provides adequate isolation. For precise vibration isolation calculations, contact our technical team.

Professional Installation Guide — Rubber Matting
Subfloor Preparation (Critical)
- Level: Floor must be flat within ±3mm over 3m — use levelling compound for depressions, grind high spots
- Moisture: Concrete below 75% RH for bonded installation — test with hygrometer, new concrete minimum 28 days cure
- Contamination: Remove all oil, paint, adhesive — mechanical scarification then vacuum
- Temperature: Both subfloor and rubber at 15-25°C — cold rubber doesn't lie flat, cold adhesive doesn't cure
Roll Installation Steps
- Unroll and allow to acclimatise flat for 24 hours at room temperature
- Dry-fit the roll, mark cutting lines, cut to size before adhesive
- Apply SBR-based contact adhesive to both subfloor and rubber underside
- Allow both surfaces to become touch-dry (10-20 minutes at room temperature)
- Position one edge carefully — contact adhesive cannot be repositioned once pressed
- Use a 75kg+ floor roller across the full surface for complete contact
- Apply edge trim or threshold strips to all exposed edges
- Do not allow heavy traffic for 24 hours
Cutting Rubber Matting
Up to 6mm: Stanley knife, fresh blade, steel straight edge. Score firmly and fold against cut. 6-15mm: jigsaw with rubber blade or heavy scissors. 15mm+: bandsaw or circular saw. Complex shapes: cardboard template first, then transfer to rubber. Cut at room temperature — cold rubber tears.
Maintenance
Daily: sweep or vacuum (grit is abrasive under foot traffic). Weekly: mop with warm water and neutral pH (6-8) cleaner. For oil: water-based degreaser (no petroleum solvents on SBR). For EPDM: most commercial cleaners acceptable. Replace when surface profile worn flat — a flat mat has lost its anti-slip and anti-fatigue benefit regardless of visual condition.
