This guide covers everything you need to know about rubber flooring in the UK — types, compounds, thickness selection, applications, installation, UK compliance standards, and current pricing. Whether you're fitting out a home gym, specifying a commercial kitchen, or laying a warehouse floor, this guide will get your specification right first time.

What is Rubber Flooring?

Rubber flooring is a floor covering manufactured from vulcanised rubber — a process that cross-links polymer chains to produce a material that is elastic yet dimensionally stable, waterproof, slip-resistant, and highly durable. It is the standard floor covering for commercial gyms, industrial facilities, equestrian stables, playgrounds, and school sports halls across the UK — and increasingly popular for domestic garages and home gyms.

Unlike vinyl or carpet, rubber flooring does not delaminate when wet, absorb spills, or permanently compress under heavy loads. A correctly specified rubber floor can outlast the building's lease cycle. We stock over 250 rubber flooring products — from 3mm entrance matting to 40mm Olympic lifting tiles — all with free UK delivery and same-day dispatch on orders before 2pm.

Types of Rubber Flooring

Rubber Flooring Rolls

The most cost-effective format for covering large areas. Sold per linear metre in widths of 1.0m, 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.8m, and 2.0m. Thicknesses from 3mm to 22mm. Surface patterns: smooth, ribbed, studded, checker plate, diamond tread. Rolls create seamless coverage — critical in wet areas and commercial installations. Best for warehouses, commercial gyms, garages, factory floors, and any large-area installation. Browse rubber flooring rolls.

Interlocking Rubber Tiles

500mm×500mm or 1000mm×1000mm tiles with jigsaw-edge connections — no adhesive required, no trip hazard at joins. DIY-installable in 1–3 hours. Each tile can be replaced individually if damaged. The dominant format for home gym installations. Available in 10–40mm for gym and sports use. More expensive per m² than rolls but ideal for domestic and phased commercial installations.

Rubber Entrance Mats

Pre-cut individual mats (600×900mm, 900×1500mm, 1200×1800mm standard sizes) for entrance points. Ribbed or studded rubber in 3–10mm, designed to trap dirt and moisture. Specify 1.5m+ in the direction of travel for effective scraping action across three full footsteps. View entrance rubber flooring.

Applications Guide

Gym Rubber Flooring

Zone-by-zone specification: cardio 6–8mm SBR roll; free weights 15mm SBR tiles; Olympic lifting 20–40mm. Rubber's impact absorption protects subfloors from dropped weights, reduces noise transfer between floors, and provides consistent grip for equipment and training footwear. The same rubber flooring used by commercial UK gym chains is available for home gym installations. Browse gym rubber flooring — from £12/m².

Garage & Workshop Rubber Flooring

Transforms cold concrete into a professional, comfortable working surface. 6mm SBR ribbed or studded for oil-free garages; 6mm nitrile for vehicle maintenance bays. Interlocking tiles for domestic garages (removable, no adhesive). A standard double garage (30m²) fitted in under 3 hours. Protects the concrete floor from dropped tools and chemical spills.

Industrial & Warehouse Rubber Flooring

Specify 10mm minimum for pedestrian walkways; 15mm for forklift traffic; 22mm for heavy plant. Anti-fatigue rubber flooring at all standing workstations addresses HSE Manual Handling guidance. Nitrile compound mandatory where oil or hydraulic fluid exposure is possible. R10–R11 slip resistance throughout. View industrial rubber flooring.

Stable & Equestrian Rubber Flooring

17–22mm natural rubber stable mats are the welfare essential for UK stables. Insulate horses from cold concrete, reduce bedding by 30–50%, prevent capped hocks, last 20+ years. Payback period on bedding savings alone: 12–24 months. Also used in horse lorries, grooming areas, and yard walkways.

Playground Safety Rubber Flooring

Must comply with BS EN 1177:2018. EPDM rubber tiles in 40–100mm for Critical Fall Height protection. Mandatory for publicly accessible play areas. UV-stable, colour-fast. Non-compliant playground surfacing creates serious liability exposure under the Occupiers Liability Act 1957.

Commercial & Retail Rubber Flooring

Heavy-duty entrance matting 10mm+, anti-fatigue matting at service counters, R11 slip-resistant rubber in kitchen and wet areas. Specify EPDM or nitrile for NHS facilities (resistance to hospital-grade disinfectants). Seamless roll installation for clinical environments.

Thickness Selection

Thickness Application Load Rating DIN 51130
3–6mm Entrance mats, light foot traffic, anti-slip overlays Pedestrian R9–R10
6–10mm Garages, workshops, commercial entrances, sports halls Light vehicle R10–R11
10–15mm Gym cardio zones, industrial walkways, stable flooring Forklift to 3t R11
15–22mm Gym free weights, Olympic lifting, heavy industry, equestrian Heavy plant R11–R12
25–40mm Playground safety (BS EN 1177), professional Olympic lifting Impact attenuation R10

Compound Guide

SBR: 90% recycled rubber — general purpose indoor use. Cost-effective, abrasion-resistant. Gyms, warehouses, garages (oil-free), workshops. Not for permanent outdoor or oil environments.

EPDM: UV-stable, weatherproof — the only correct compound for permanent outdoor rubber flooring. Playground surfaces, pool surrounds, outdoor gym areas, garden paths.

Nitrile (NBR): Oil and fuel resistant — mandatory for vehicle maintenance bays, engineering workshops, commercial kitchen areas with cooking oil. SBR fails rapidly in oil environments.

Natural Rubber: Maximum elasticity and tear resistance — equestrian stable mats, high-flex applications, food-grade (specific grades). Degrades in UV and petroleum.

Installation Guide

Surface prep: Clean, dry, flat, contamination-free. Fill cracks with self-levelling compound. Concrete must be cured 28 days for bonded installation.

Cutting: 3–6mm: Stanley knife and straight edge. 6–12mm: heavy-duty utility knife. 15mm+: jigsaw with fine-tooth blade.

Loose-lay: Most rubber flooring needs no adhesive — weight and rubber grip hold it in place on flat surfaces. Allow rolls 30 minutes to relax before cutting.

Bonded: Contact adhesive (Evo-Stik 528) for high-traffic commercial installations and ramps. Apply to both surfaces, 10-minute flash-off, press firmly — not repositionable.

UK Standards

DIN 51130: R9–R13 slip resistance classification. R10 minimum for wet commercial areas per HSE guidance.

BS EN 1177:2018: Playground safety surfacing — Critical Fall Height testing. Mandatory for public play areas.

Workplace Regulations 1992: Floors must be suitable, in good condition, and free from obstruction.

BS EN ISO 10874: Classification of floor coverings by use class — residential, commercial, industrial.
