General Rubber Matting Questions

What thickness of rubber matting do I need?

Thickness depends on your application:

  • Light-use areas (playrooms, yoga, entrances): 6–8mm
  • Home gym flooring: 15–20mm for free weights and cardio
  • Commercial gyms / Olympic lifting: 30mm+
  • Stable mats: 17–22mm for horse comfort and durability
  • Industrial anti-fatigue mats: 12–15mm for standing-work environments

See our full thickness guide for a detailed breakdown by use case.

Why does new rubber matting smell, and how long does it last?

New rubber matting — especially recycled SBR rubber — has a natural sulphur-based odour from the vulcanisation process. This is normal and not harmful. The smell typically fades within 2–6 weeks with adequate ventilation.

To speed it up: unroll mats outdoors, wipe with diluted white vinegar, and allow airflow before installing in enclosed rooms. EPDM rubber has significantly less odour and is a better choice for sensitive environments. Read our dedicated article: Rubber Flooring That Doesn't Smell.

Is rubber matting waterproof?

Solid rubber sheet and mats are highly water-resistant and will not absorb water — ideal for wet areas, stables, and outdoor use. Interlocking tiles with open joints allow water to pass through the gaps rather than sit on the surface, which is great for drainage but not a sealed waterproof barrier. For fully waterproof coverage, use solid rubber rolls or sheets laid with sealed edges.

Can rubber matting be used outdoors?

Yes — many rubber mats are suitable for outdoor use, but material choice matters:

  • EPDM rubber: UV-stable, handles freeze-thaw without cracking — best for permanent outdoor installation
  • SBR recycled rubber: Weather-resistant but can fade in prolonged direct sunlight
  • NBR/nitrile rubber: Not UV-rated — avoid outdoors

Our outdoor rubber mats and grass protection mats are specifically designed for year-round UK weather.

How do I cut rubber matting to size?

For mats up to 10mm thick, a sharp utility knife and straight edge give clean cuts — score firmly several times rather than cutting in one pass. For thicker mats (15mm+), use a jigsaw with a coarse blade or a circular saw with a fine-tooth blade. Always cut on a sacrificial board. Mark your cut line with chalk or a marker pen. Rubber is easier to cut when slightly warm — avoid cutting in very cold conditions.

What is the difference between SBR, EPDM, and NBR rubber?

  • SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber): Recycled rubber — economical, tough, ideal for gyms, stables, and industrial flooring. Has a strong initial odour.
  • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer): Synthetic rubber — excellent UV, ozone, and weather resistance. Best for outdoor and coloured flooring.
  • NBR/Nitrile: Outstanding oil and fuel resistance — the go-to for garages and engineering applications.
  • Neoprene: Flexible, chemical-resistant, good for marine and outdoor use.

Will rubber matting damage my floor underneath?

Rubber mats laid loose on sealed hard floors are generally safe and cause no permanent damage. However, some recycled SBR rubber can stain light-coloured vinyl or laminate flooring over time due to plasticiser migration. To prevent this, place a protective underlay between the mat and your floor, or choose EPDM-backed mats. Never install rubber matting directly over underfloor heating without confirming compatibility — excess heat can accelerate off-gassing and staining.

Gym Flooring FAQs

How thick should gym flooring be?

Gym flooring thickness by training zone:

  • Cardio zones (treadmills, bikes): 6–8mm
  • Free weights / general training: 15–20mm
  • Olympic lifting platforms: 30–50mm for maximum impact absorption

Over concrete, go thicker — 20mm minimum for any free weight area. For a full breakdown, see our gym flooring thickness guide.

Can I use rubber gym flooring over underfloor heating?

Yes, but with precautions. Keep floor surface temperature below 27°C — the limit for most rubber compounds. Thick rubber (30mm+) can insulate the floor and cause heat build-up. Use thinner rubber tiles (8–15mm) over UFH where possible, and ensure the system has a thermostat with a floor sensor. Always check the specific product's heat rating before installation.

What weight can rubber gym flooring support?

Rubber flooring itself has no meaningful weight limit for typical gym use. The concern is impact loading when dropping weights. For Olympic lifting, use 30mm+ rubber platforms to absorb the drop. Heavy machinery or vehicles require reinforced rubber matting rated for that purpose — always check product specifications.

How do I install rubber gym flooring?

Most home gym installations use loose-lay interlocking tiles — no adhesive needed. Ensure your sub-floor is clean, dry, and level. Start from the centre or one corner, click tiles together, and cut edge tiles to fit with a utility knife. For commercial gyms, permanent adhesive installation adds stability. See our full guide: How to Install Rubber Gym Flooring.

What's the best rubber flooring for a garage gym?

For a garage gym conversion, 15–20mm SBR rubber rolls or interlocking tiles are the most popular choice. They protect the concrete, absorb impact from dropped weights, and can be removed if needed. If you work on vehicles in the same space, opt for oil-resistant NBR tiles. See our guide: Garage Gym Flooring on a Budget.

Stable Mat FAQs

What size stable mats do I need?

Standard stable mats are 1.83m × 0.91m (6ft × 3ft) or 1.22m × 0.91m (4ft × 3ft). A standard 12ft × 12ft stable box requires approximately 8 mats in the 6×3 size. For larger boxes (14×14ft), allow 10–12 mats. Always measure your floor area precisely and account for any alcoves. See our stable mats collection for all sizes and thicknesses.

Do stable mats need to be glued down?

Usually no — the weight of the mats (22–35kg each) keeps them in place. If your horse paws or is restless, use rubber bonding adhesive at edges. For wash-down bays and feed areas where mats may float on water, perimeter adhesive is recommended. Loose-lay with close-butted joints is the most practical DIY approach for stable boxes.

Do stable mats help with horse joint health?

Yes — quality rubber stable mats significantly reduce joint stress on hard concrete floors. Horse owners consistently report reduced bedding usage (saving on shavings/straw costs), improved stable hygiene, and better comfort — particularly for older horses or those with joint conditions. A 17–22mm mat creates a consistent, cushioned, non-slip surface.

Are stable mats non-slip when wet?

Yes — our stable mats feature a studded or diamond-pattern surface that maintains grip even when wet. This is essential for horse safety during mucking out and wash-downs. Always choose stable mats with a textured surface — smooth rubber becomes dangerously slippery when wet. Read our guide: Horse Stable Mats UK: Complete Guide.

How do stable mats help with drainage?

Rubber stable mats with channel-drain designs allow urine and wash water to drain towards stable drains, reducing ammonia build-up and keeping bedding drier. When laid on a properly sloped concrete floor, close-butted rubber mats with chamfered edges create channels for drainage without creating trip hazards. See our article on stable yard drainage solutions.

Grass Mat FAQs

How do rubber grass mats work?

Rubber grass mats (also called grass protection mats or lawn reinforcement mats) are open-grid panels made from recycled rubber or plastic. Grass grows up through the open cells while the grid distributes weight across a wider area — preventing turf compaction and muddy ruts. The open structure allows water to drain naturally and roots to continue growing. See our complete grass mats guide.

Can I use grass mats on a soft or waterlogged lawn?

Grass mats help prevent further damage on soft ground but will not fix an underlying drainage problem. Address root drainage issues first (French drain, soil aeration), then install mats. On moderately soft ground, lay a geotextile membrane underneath for better load distribution. For heavily trafficked muddy areas like paddock gateways, consider solid rubber stable mats or ground reinforcement panels.

Are grass protection mats permanent or temporary?

Both — they're modular and interlock together, so they can be lifted, moved, and relaid for event use (festivals, outdoor weddings, markets). For permanent driveways or parking areas, they can be pinned or edged to prevent shifting. Grass underneath typically remains healthy as light and water penetrate the open grid.

What vehicles can drive on rubber grass mats?

Standard grass mats are typically rated for cars and light vans up to 3.5 tonnes. For heavier vehicles — lorries, horse trailers, plant equipment — use heavy-duty ground reinforcement panels with higher load ratings. Always check the product's load rating before driving vehicles over grass mats.

Maintenance & Care FAQs

How do I clean rubber matting?

For routine cleaning: sweep or vacuum loose debris, then mop with warm water and mild detergent. Avoid bleach, solvent-based cleaners, or high-pressure jet washers on bonded installations — these degrade the surface. For stable mats, remove soiled bedding daily and periodically hose down. Gym flooring can be sanitised with diluted disinfectant (check rubber compatibility). Deep clean 2–4 times per year. See our rubber flooring maintenance guide.

How do I extend the life of my rubber matting?

Key habits that extend lifespan:

  • Sweep regularly to remove abrasive grit
  • Avoid dragging sharp-edged equipment across the surface
  • Use dedicated lifting platforms for Olympic weightlifting
  • Rotate mats in high-traffic zones to even out wear
  • Apply rubber conditioner/protectant annually for outdoor installations
  • Inspect edges and joints annually for lifting or damage

Can rubber matting be recycled?

Many of our mats are already made from recycled rubber — SBR products use reclaimed tyre rubber. At end of life, rubber matting can often be taken to recycling centres accepting rubber waste, or repurposed as underlays, sub-base material, or garden edging. Some manufacturers operate take-back schemes. Contact your local council recycling centre for options in your area.
