1. Prepare the subfloor: Ensure the surface is clean, dry, flat and free from dust, grease and old adhesive. Any imperfections in the subfloor will show through — take time to fill cracks and sand high spots.
2. Acclimatise: Leave the planks in the room for at least 24 hours before installation. This allows the vinyl to adjust to the room temperature and humidity, preventing expansion issues after fitting.
3. Plan your layout: Lay out the planks dry first to plan the pattern and ensure cut pieces at the edges are balanced. Start from the centre of the room or the most visible wall.
4. Peel the backing: Remove the protective backing paper from one plank at a time. Do not rush — handle each plank carefully to avoid touching the adhesive surface.
5. Press firmly: Position the plank and press down firmly from the centre outwards, working out any air bubbles. Use a roller or hard-soled shoe for best adhesion.
6. Continue the pattern: Stagger the joins by at least 15cm between rows for a natural, professional look. Cut planks using a sharp craft knife and straight edge — score and snap for clean cuts.
7. Finish the edges: Use appropriate floor trim or threshold strips at doorways and transitions to other floor coverings for a polished finish.
8. Allow to set: Avoid heavy foot traffic for at least 24 hours after installation to allow the adhesive to fully cure.
