Campervan Flooring – Heavy-Duty Studded Rubber for VW Transporters, Sprinters & Van Conversions

✓ R11 Non-Slip Rating  |  ✓ Easy Clean Surface  |  ✓ Cuts with Stanley Knife  |  ✓ No Adhesive Required

Why Van Converters Choose Studded Rubber Flooring

Campervan flooring lives hard. Muddy boots after hikes. Sandy feet from beach days. Wet dogs jumping in. Spilled drinks, dropped pans, and constant traffic between the living space and the cab. Your floor needs to handle real life, not just look good in Instagram photos.

This studded rubber matting is the standard choice for van conversions because it solves actual van life problems:

  • Genuinely easy to clean: Sand, mud, and crumbs sweep out. Spills wipe up. A quick mop and you're done. No carpet shampooing, no plywood staining, no vinyl peeling at the edges.
  • Grip in all conditions: The raised studs provide grip when the floor is wet from rain tracked in or a wet dog shaking off. R11 rated for slip resistance—your partner won't slip stepping out in the morning.
  • Forgiving of imperfect floors: Van floors are never flat. The 3mm rubber conforms to undulations and hides minor imperfections in your plywood subfloor. Installed over slightly rough OSB? No problem.
  • DIY-friendly installation: Cuts with a Stanley knife. Lies flat without curling. No specialist tools or adhesive required for most installations. Perfect for self-builders.

Van-Specific Fitting Guides

VW Transporter T5/T6/T6.1

The 1.2m width covers the main cargo area with minimal trimming. Allow approximately 2.5-3 linear metres for full cargo area coverage depending on your bed configuration. The rubber conforms well to the raised ridges in the Transporter floor pan.

Mercedes Sprinter / VW Crafter

For MWB vans, the 1.5m width minimises joins. LWB vans typically require 4-5 linear metres of flooring. The extra width of panel vans means the rubber runs cab-to-rear with a single central join in most configurations.

Ford Transit Custom

The Custom's relatively flat floor is ideal for rubber matting. Most conversions require 2.5-3 linear metres. Use the 1.5m width to minimise trimming waste.

Renault Trafic / Vauxhall Vivaro

Similar dimensions to the Transit Custom. The 1.2m width often gives less waste due to the narrower cargo bay.

Installation Guide for Self-Builders

Subfloor Preparation

  1. Plywood base: The rubber can lay directly on 9-12mm plywood. Sand any raised screw heads flush.
  2. Insulated floor: If you've insulated with Celotex/PIR and ply-topped, the rubber goes straight on top.
  3. Bare metal: Not recommended. Install a plywood subfloor for proper insulation and fixing points.

Cutting and Fitting

  1. Create a cardboard template for complex areas (wheel arches, cab steps, furniture cutouts)
  2. Transfer template to rubber and cut with sharp Stanley knife
  3. Roll out from one end—the rubber lies flat without needing to relax
  4. Tuck edges under furniture kickboards or trim with aluminium angle

Fixing Methods

  • Loose lay: For removable installations, the rubber's weight holds it in place. Add double-sided tape at edges if needed.
  • Contact adhesive: For permanent installations, contact adhesive provides a solid bond. Apply to both surfaces, allow to tack, then press together.
  • Furniture weight: In most conversions, fitted furniture holds the floor edges in place—no adhesive required.

Living With Rubber Flooring

Daily Cleaning

Sweep or vacuum loose debris. Most dirt doesn't stick to the rubber surface—it sits on top ready to be swept out the door. For sticky spills, a damp cloth sorts it.

Deep Cleaning

Mop with warm water and a splash of washing-up liquid. The studded pattern scrubs clean easily. Allow to dry before putting rugs back down.

Pet-Friendly

Dog owners love rubber flooring. Muddy paws clean up instantly. The rubber is non-absorbent so doesn't harbour doggy odours. Claws don't damage the surface.

Comparison: Rubber vs Vinyl vs Carpet

Feature Studded Rubber Vinyl Plank Carpet
Cleaning Sweep/mop Sweep/mop Vacuum/shampoo
Wet grip Excellent (R11) Poor when wet Poor
DIY install Easy Medium Easy
Durability Excellent Good Poor
Odour resistance Non-absorbent Non-absorbent Absorbs spills

Calculating Your Van Coverage

  • VW T5/T6: 2.5-3 linear metres (1.2m width)
  • Sprinter/Crafter MWB: 3-3.5 linear metres (1.5m width)
  • Sprinter/Crafter LWB: 4-5 linear metres (1.5m width)
  • Transit Custom: 2.5-3 linear metres (1.2m or 1.5m width)

Add 10-15% for cutting waste around wheel arches and furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions – Campervan Flooring

Does the rubber smell in a closed van?

New rubber has a mild scent that dissipates within 1-2 weeks. Unroll and air in a garage before fitting if smell is a concern. Once installed and aired, there's no ongoing odour.

Will the floor get too hot in summer?

Black rubber absorbs heat but is comfortable barefoot in normal conditions. In extreme heat, a rug in the living area solves any issue. The rubber itself isn't damaged by heat within normal van temperatures.

Can I put furniture legs directly on the rubber?

Yes. The rubber doesn't dent permanently from furniture. Heavy point loads (like table legs) are fine. For very heavy items, use load-spreading feet.

Does the studded pattern hurt barefoot?

No—the rounded penny studs are comfortable underfoot. It's similar to a rubber bathroom mat. Many van lifers go barefoot indoors without issue.

How do I join two rolls?

Butt the edges together tightly. For permanent joins, use double-sided flooring tape or a strip of contact adhesive on the subfloor. Furniture usually covers join lines.

Is this the same rubber used in commercial vans?

Yes. Studded penny-pattern rubber is the industry standard for delivery vans, work vans, and commercial vehicles. It's chosen for durability and easy cleaning—the same reasons it works in campervans.

Will LPG/propane damage the rubber?

LPG in normal use won't affect the rubber. For gas locker areas where leaks might pool, ensure proper ventilation to the exterior as per gas safety regulations.

Can I return it if it doesn't fit my van?

Uncut rolls can be returned within 14 days for a full refund. Once cut to your van's shape, we can't resell it—so measure carefully first.

Quality Guarantee

Every roll is inspected before dispatch. If the flooring arrives damaged, contact us within 48 hours for replacement or refund. We want your van build to go smoothly.

Commercial Suitability Statement

This studded rubber flooring is used by self-builders and professional van conversion companies alike. Suitable for VW Transporters, Mercedes Sprinters, Ford Transits, Renault Trafics, and all panel van conversions. Designed for daily use in campervan living environments.
