The complete UK guide to rubber grass mats — what they are, where to use them, how to install them, and what to buy. Covers domestic driveways, garden paths, equestrian yards, event sites, and sports pitches.

What Are Rubber Grass Mats?

Rubber grass mats are open-cell rubber panels or rolls that sit on grass or soil to distribute load, prevent compaction, and protect the surface from wear — while allowing grass to grow through the cells and water to drain freely. The base material is UV-stabilised SBR rubber, frost-resistant and rated for 10–15 years of outdoor use in the UK climate.

We stock 38 rubber grass mat products — from 10mm lightweight event matting to 25mm heavy-duty vehicle-rated panels — all with free UK delivery and same-day dispatch on orders before 2pm.

Types Available

Roll matting (10–17mm): Sold per linear metre, cut to any length. Best for garden paths, event walkways, and seasonal lawn protection. Easy to handle and cut with scissors.

Interlocking panels (12–25mm): Modular panels that click together. Best for driveways, car parks, and equestrian yards. Vehicle-rated from 17mm upward.

Grass protection mesh (large rolls): 2m × 30m rolls for rapid event deployment. Lightweight, quick to deploy and collect.

Applications

Domestic driveways: 17–20mm vehicle-rated panels, SUDS-compliant, no planning permission required. Install over compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. View driveway panels.

Garden paths: 10–12mm roll matting, loose-laid on levelled ground. Protects lawns from wear on high-traffic routes to sheds, offices, and vegetable plots.

Overflow car parks: 17–22mm panels for events, farms, and rural venues. Handle car and light van loads without rutting. Removable after events.

Equestrian yards: 17–22mm heavy-duty panels at stable entrances, hay barn approaches, and exercise areas. Prevents ground churn, provides hoof grip in wet conditions.

Sports pitches: Roll matting over goal mouths and high-wear areas during training and off-season. Protects turf, enables recovery.

Events and festivals: Lightweight roll matting for pedestrian walkways, catering areas, and gate zones. Removes cleanly, grass recovers within days.

Rubber vs Plastic Grass Grids

Property Rubber Grass Mats Plastic Grass Grids
Flexibility ✅ Conforms to uneven ground ❌ Rigid — can rock on uneven surfaces
Freeze-thaw resistance ✅ Won't crack in cold ⚠️ Brittle in cold — can crack
Grip when wet ✅ Excellent rubber texture ⚠️ Smooth — can be slippery
Lifespan 10–15 years 5–10 years
Impact absorption ✅ Absorbs point loads ❌ Transmits point loads directly

SUDS Planning Rules

Since October 2008, replacing more than 5m² of front garden with an impermeable surface requires planning permission under the GPDO 2008. Rubber grass mats are permeable — water drains through the open cells — so they are SUDS-compliant and do not require planning permission. This is a major advantage for domestic driveway projects where block paving or tarmac would require a planning application.

Installation Guide

Pedestrian (garden paths): Level and clear the ground. Lay directly on grass or compacted soil. Loose-lay for temporary use; pin edges for permanent installation. No sub-base needed on firm ground.

Vehicle use (driveways, car parks): Excavate 100mm. Compact 50–100mm MOT Type 1 sub-base. Optional geotextile membrane. Lay panels, interlock edges. Cut with jigsaw. Secure perimeter with ground pins. Top-dress cells with seed/sand for grass establishment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do rubber grass mats need planning permission?

No — they are SUDS-compliant (permeable) so no planning permission is required for domestic driveways under the 2008 GPDO.

How long do rubber grass mats last?

10–15 years outdoor use. UV-stabilised SBR rubber does not rot, warp, or crack in UK conditions.

What load rating do I need for cars?

Minimum 150t/m². Our 17–20mm vehicle panels are rated to 150–250t/m².

Will grass grow through?

Yes — top-dress cells with seed/sand mix and water until established (4–6 weeks in spring).

Are they better than plastic grids?

Yes — rubber flexes with the ground, won't crack in cold weather, and provides better grip when wet.

Can I install them myself?

Yes — interlocking panels and roll matting are fully DIY-installable. A double driveway typically takes one day.

How do I cut them?

Craft knife or scissors for 10–15mm rolls. Jigsaw or angle grinder for 17mm+ panels.

Are they safe for horses and children?

Yes — non-toxic SBR rubber, no sharp edges under normal use. Textured surface provides grip for horses in wet conditions.
