What size entrance mat do I need?

Entrance mat sizing follows the 3-footstep rule: an effective mat must be long enough for each foot to land on it 3 times before entering the building — that means at least 115cm (4ft) in the direction of travel. Width should match the doorway width. Residential minimum: 60x90cm. Small commercial (shop door, office): 90x150cm. High-traffic commercial (supermarket, school, hotel): 120x180cm or larger. For external plus internal zoning, use 2 mats: a scraper outside, a dirt-trapper inside.

What is the best commercial entrance mat for a UK business?

For most UK commercial entrances, a heavy-duty coir or rubber-backed barrier mat is the best choice. Coir excels at scraping dried mud and grit from shoe soles. Rubber-backed barrier mats (with nylon or polypropylene pile) excel at absorbing moisture and fine dirt. For very high-traffic locations — hotels, schools, supermarkets — a 2-zone system is optimal: rubber scraper mat externally, barrier mat internally. For wet UK weather, choose mats with drainage channels that prevent water pooling on the mat surface.

How much dirt do entrance mats really capture?

Research by the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) and multiple flooring industry studies consistently shows that 80–90% of dirt, moisture and debris entering a building is carried in on footwear within the first 10–15 steps. A well-specified entrance mat system (external scraper + internal barrier) captures approximately 85% of this contamination before it reaches the interior floor. This translates directly to reduced cleaning costs: most commercial facilities report 50–70% reduction in internal floor cleaning frequency after installing proper entrance matting.

What is the difference between coir and rubber entrance mats?

Coir mats are made from natural coconut fibre — extremely effective at scraping and trapping dry dirt and grit from shoe soles due to the coarse, abrasive texture. They are best used externally or in covered entrances. Coir absorbs moisture but can become saturated in very wet conditions. Rubber entrance mats use a moulded rubber surface (ribbed, studded or anti-fatigue profile) with excellent water drainage — ideal for wet environments and heavy foot traffic. Rubber-backed barrier mats combine a carpet pile surface (for moisture absorption) with a solid rubber backing that grips hard floors and prevents mat creep.

How do I stop entrance mats from moving on hard floors?

Mat creep (mats sliding on hard floors) is the most common entrance mat problem. Solutions in order of effectiveness: 1) Choose mats with heavy rubber or vinyl backing — weight and grip prevent movement. 2) Use a mat anchor tape (double-sided mat tape) around the perimeter — repositionable versions allow easy cleaning. 3) Install a recessed mat well — the most permanent solution for permanent commercial entrances. 4) For mats on carpet, choose mats with carpet-grip backing (spike backing) rather than smooth rubber.

Can entrance mats be used outdoors?

Yes — but specify outdoor-rated mats. Outdoor entrance mats must be UV-stable (to prevent fading and degradation), frost-resistant, allow drainage (open-grid, drainage channels or raised surface patterns prevent water pooling), and have an anti-slip surface that works when wet. Rubber and EPDM entrance mats are suitable for external use. Coir mats can be used externally in covered porches but should not be left exposed to prolonged rain as they become saturated and slow to dry. Standard carpet-pile barrier mats are indoor only.

How often should commercial entrance mats be cleaned?

Commercial entrance mats should be vacuumed or beaten daily to remove surface dirt before it becomes embedded. Deep cleaning should happen weekly: rubber mats can be hosed or pressure-washed and air-dried; coir mats should be beaten thoroughly and allowed to dry completely before returning to use. In winter months or during wet weather, increase frequency. Saturated or compacted mats lose their dirt-trapping effectiveness — a clean mat captures 80-90% of dirt; a dirty saturated mat may capture less than 30%.

Do you offer custom logo entrance mats?

Yes — we supply custom logo entrance mats for businesses, schools, hotels and public buildings. Options include: printed coir mats (logo or text printed directly onto coconut fibre surface), inlaid rubber logo mats (logo formed from coloured rubber — extremely durable, 5+ year lifespan), and digital print nylon mats (photographic-quality full-colour printing). Minimum quantities vary by type. Supply your logo artwork and we will provide a proof before production. Turnaround is typically 10–15 working days. Contact us for a quote.

Entrance Matting UK - Commercial Barrier Mats & Door Mats

Professional entrance matting for commercial buildings, offices, retail stores, schools, and public spaces. Our barrier matting systems trap up to 95% of dirt and moisture at the door – protecting interior floors and reducing cleaning costs. Free UK delivery on all entrance mat orders.

From heavy-duty commercial entrance mats for high-traffic buildings to branded logo mats for reception areas, we supply complete entrance matting solutions trusted by facilities managers across the UK.

Why Entrance Matting Matters

Effective entrance matting is one of the best investments any commercial building can make:

Floor Protection: 80% of dirt in buildings is tracked in from outside. Entrance mats capture this at source, extending the life of expensive interior flooring by years.
Cleaning Cost Reduction: Buildings with proper entrance matting systems spend up to 65% less on interior floor cleaning. The mats do the work that would otherwise require daily mopping and regular deep cleaning.
Slip Prevention: Wet floors from rain and snow are a major slip hazard. Moisture-absorbing entrance mats keep interior floors dry and safe, reducing slip-and-fall liability.
Professional Appearance: A quality entrance mat system signals attention to detail and professionalism. Branded mats reinforce company identity right from the door.
Compliance: Many commercial premises require entrance matting to meet health and safety regulations, particularly around slip resistance requirements.

The Three-Zone Entrance Matting System

Effective entrance matting uses a three-zone system to progressively clean footwear:

Zone 1: Scraper Mat (External)

Positioned outside the door, scraper mats remove the heaviest dirt, mud, and debris:

Aggressive scraping action from rubber fingers or metal blades
Open construction allows debris to fall through
Weather-resistant materials withstand UV and rain
Typically rubber, coir (coconut fibre), or metal grating

Recommended length: 1-2 footsteps (600-1200mm)

Zone 2: Scraper/Wiper Mat (Entrance Lobby)

Inside the door, combination mats scrape remaining dirt while starting to absorb moisture:

Dual-action surface – scrapes and wipes simultaneously
Typically ribbed or textured rubber with absorbent inserts
Captures fine particles missed by external scraper
Begins moisture absorption process

Recommended length: 2-4 footsteps (1200-2400mm)

Zone 3: Wiper/Finishing Mat (Interior)

Final moisture absorption and fine dust capture before entering main building:

High-absorption textile or carpet surface
Removes final moisture traces
Captures fine dust particles
Often branded or colour-matched to interior

Recommended length: 3-5 footsteps (1800-3000mm)

Total system: Industry best practice recommends 6-12 footsteps of matting coverage for effective dirt and moisture control in high-traffic buildings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should entrance matting be?

Minimum 4-6 footsteps (1200-1800mm) for light traffic, 8-12 footsteps (2400-3600mm) for high-traffic commercial entrances. The longer the better for effective dirt and moisture capture.

What's the difference between entrance mats and barrier mats?

Terms are often used interchangeably. "Barrier mat" typically refers to mats designed to stop (barrier) dirt and moisture entering a building – functionally the same as entrance matting.

Do entrance mats need to be slip-rated?

For commercial premises, yes. Look for mats with R-ratings (R10 minimum for interior use, R11-R13 for wet environments). This protects against slip-and-fall claims.

Can entrance mats go outside?

Rubber scraper mats and coir mats are suitable for outdoor use. Carpet-topped mats should be kept undercover to prevent waterlogging and degradation.

How often should entrance mats be replaced?

Quality commercial entrance mats last 5-10 years under heavy traffic. Replace when the surface becomes worn smooth, edges are damaged, or moisture absorption reduces noticeably.

Can I get custom-sized entrance mats?

Yes – most of our entrance matting can be cut to size. For mat wells and specific dimensions, contact us with your requirements.

Commercial Entrance Mats UK — Complete System Specification Guide

A correctly specified entrance mat system removes up to 95% of tracked-in dirt within the first 2 metres — reducing interior cleaning costs by up to 80% and extending hard floor lifespans by years (British Flooring Association data).

The Three-Zone System

Zone 1 — Scraper (600mm min): Rigid coir or rubber profile at the external entrance. Physically removes mud, grit, and leaves from shoe soles. Most effective zone for heavy contamination removal.

Zone 2 — Wiper/scraper (900mm min): Combined scraping of remaining fine contamination with initial moisture absorption. Barrier mat format with alternating hard scraper and absorbent wiper elements.

Zone 3 — Wiper (500mm min): Final moisture absorption zone immediately inside the door. Nylon, polypropylene, or microfibre pile. Keeps interior floor dry even in heavy rain. Total minimum 2,000mm depth.

Regulatory Requirements

Workplace Regs 1992 Reg 12: Floors must be free from hazardous conditions. A correctly specified maintained entrance mat system is the primary Reg 12 control measure for entrance slip risk.

BS 8300 (Accessibility): Entrance mats must not present raised edges over 5mm. Pile height maximum 12mm. Mats must be firmly fixed or recessed. Recessed mat wells are the professional accessible building standard.

Logo Mat Integration

Custom logo entrance mats in Zone 2 position reinforce brand identity at the most-seen location in any commercial premises. Available in full-colour nylon pile or woven designs up to 20 colours. Any size. 10-15 working day production lead time. Free design proof before production. Rubbermatting Direct supplies logo mats to hotels, retailers, and corporate premises across the UK.

Recessed Mat Well Dimensions

Depth: mat thickness + 2mm for drainage clearance. Width: mat width + 10mm for easy removal. Length: minimum 1,500mm in direction of travel. Drainage frame beneath mat recommended for high-footfall positions.

All entrance matting cut to your exact dimensions. Standard products same or next working day dispatch. Logo mats 10-15 working days. Free UK mainland delivery. Call 01282 277786 for system specification advice.

Commercial Entrance Matting — Advanced Applications

The single most impactful improvement to entrance contamination management is increasing mat depth, not upgrading to a more expensive product. BRE research: 900mm depth removes 60-65% of contamination; 1,500mm removes 85-90%; 2,000mm+ removes 92-95%.

Healthcare Entrances

NHS entrance matting must achieve PTV 36+ (BS 8300 accessible design), resist infection-control cleaning regimes, and not impede wheelchair users. Antimicrobial-treated nylon pile mats for infection-sensitive environments. COSHH data sheets for NHS procurement records. Rubbermatting Direct supplies NHS Trusts across the UK with compliant entrance matting and full documentation.

Hotel & Hospitality

Custom logo mats in hotel colour palette at Zone 2 position reinforce brand identity — seen by 100% of guests every visit. Full-colour nylon pile or woven designs. Any size. 10-15 working day lead time. Free design proof before production. Trusted by UK hotel groups including independent hotels and national brands.

Entrance Matting — Sector Guide & ROI Analysis

Mat Rental vs Purchase — The Economics

Rental: £15-30/week per mat including cleaning = £3,900-7,800 per mat over 5 years. Purchase (Rubbermatting Direct): £80-250 per mat. In-house cleaning labour: £150-300/year = £750-1,500 over 5 years. Total owned cost: £830-1,750 vs rental £3,900-7,800. Most premises: outright purchase with in-house cleaning provides 2-4× better value. Rental justified only when cleaning capacity genuinely unavailable or very high footfall requiring weekly replacement.

Sector Applications

NHS & Healthcare: Recessed mat wells mandatory (BS 8300). Antimicrobial-treated pile for infection control. PTV 36+ accessible design. COSHH data sheets for procurement records.

Retail chains: Standardised specification across estate for consistent brand presentation. Rubbermatting Direct works with retail facilities teams on multi-site programme specifications and supply frameworks.

Schools & Educational: High footfall, heavy contamination. Robust scraper/wiper system minimum 1,500mm. Coir mats replace annually in commercial use.

Hospitality: Logo mats in hotel brand palette reinforce brand identity at the most-seen location in the building. Any colour, any size. 10-15 working day lead time. Free design proof.

Liability Protection

Under the Occupiers' Liability Act 1957, premises owners must manage foreseeable slip risks. An entrance mat system with documented PTV performance is substantive evidence of appropriate risk management in any slip claim. Rubbermatting Direct provides PTV test certificates for all entrance matting products on request.

Professional Installation Guide — Rubber Matting

Subfloor Preparation (Critical)

Level: Floor must be flat within ±3mm over 3m — use levelling compound for depressions, grind high spots
Moisture: Concrete below 75% RH for bonded installation — test with hygrometer, new concrete minimum 28 days cure
Contamination: Remove all oil, paint, adhesive — mechanical scarification then vacuum
Temperature: Both subfloor and rubber at 15-25°C — cold rubber doesn't lie flat, cold adhesive doesn't cure

Roll Installation Steps

Unroll and allow to acclimatise flat for 24 hours at room temperature
Dry-fit the roll, mark cutting lines, cut to size before adhesive
Apply SBR-based contact adhesive to both subfloor and rubber underside
Allow both surfaces to become touch-dry (10-20 minutes at room temperature)
Position one edge carefully — contact adhesive cannot be repositioned once pressed
Use a 75kg+ floor roller across the full surface for complete contact
Apply edge trim or threshold strips to all exposed edges
Do not allow heavy traffic for 24 hours

Cutting Rubber Matting

Up to 6mm: Stanley knife, fresh blade, steel straight edge. Score firmly and fold against cut. 6-15mm: jigsaw with rubber blade or heavy scissors. 15mm+: bandsaw or circular saw. Complex shapes: cardboard template first, then transfer to rubber. Cut at room temperature — cold rubber tears.

Maintenance

Daily: sweep or vacuum (grit is abrasive under foot traffic). Weekly: mop with warm water and neutral pH (6-8) cleaner. For oil: water-based degreaser (no petroleum solvents on SBR). For EPDM: most commercial cleaners acceptable. Replace when surface profile worn flat — a flat mat has lost its anti-slip and anti-fatigue benefit regardless of visual condition.
