If you need rubber matting for your home, workshop, gym, or industrial facility in the UK, this guide will help you make the right choice first time. Rubber matting is one of the most versatile flooring solutions available — durable, slip-resistant, and effective across dozens of applications. But with dozens of compounds, thicknesses, and formats available, getting the specification right matters.

What is Rubber Matting?

Rubber matting is a surface covering manufactured from vulcanised rubber — either natural latex or synthetic compounds — designed to provide grip, cushioning, floor protection, and durability. Unlike PVC or foam alternatives, rubber is dimensionally stable under load, resistant to permanent compression, and capable of lasting 15–20+ years in commercial service.

The UK rubber matting market covers everything from 3mm entrance mats to 22mm stable mats, from individual door mats to factory-floor roll coverage of thousands of square metres. Browse our complete UK rubber matting range — over 180 products in stock.

The Four Main Rubber Compounds

Choosing the correct compound is the most important decision you will make. The wrong compound fails prematurely regardless of price or thickness.

SBR — The Workhorse

Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) is made from 90%+ recycled material — typically post-consumer vehicle tyres. It is the most cost-effective, most widely used rubber matting compound in the UK. Shore A hardness of 55–65 gives good abrasion resistance and load-bearing capability. Ideal for: gyms, workshops, industrial floors, garages (without oil exposure), van linings, and general commercial use. Avoid SBR for permanent outdoor installations or oil/chemical environments.

EPDM — The Outdoor Specialist

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) is a fully synthetic rubber that resists UV radiation, ozone, and weathering. It remains flexible and stable from −40°C to +80°C — making it the only correct choice for permanent outdoor rubber matting. EPDM is also the compound used for coloured rubber surfaces (playgrounds, sports areas) because it is colour-fast where SBR would fade. Costs 20–30% more than SBR but outlasts it many times over in outdoor use.

Nitrile — The Oil Fighter

Nitrile (NBR) rubber resists petroleum products — oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, greases. This makes it the mandatory specification for garages with vehicle maintenance, engineering workshops, commercial kitchens with cooking oil exposure, and any industrial environment where rubber matting will contact hydrocarbons. SBR swells and degrades rapidly when exposed to oil — a mistake that costs both the matting and potentially the floor below.

Natural Rubber — The Flex Champion

Natural rubber (NR) offers the highest elasticity and tear resistance of all rubber compounds — making it the preferred choice for equestrian stable mats where horse hoof impact exerts extreme concentrated load. Natural rubber stable mats at 17–22mm regularly achieve 20+ years of service life. Not suitable for UV or oil exposure.

Rubber Matting Thickness Guide

Thickness selection depends entirely on the load type and application. Using too thin a mat causes rapid wear and potential subfloor damage. Using unnecessarily thick matting wastes budget and creates trip hazards at edges.

  • 3–6mm: Entrance mats, light foot traffic, anti-slip overlays. Pedestrian load only.
  • 6–10mm: Workshops, garages, van lining, storerooms. Light vehicle traffic (pallet trucks).
  • 10–15mm: Industrial floors, gym areas, stable mats. Forklift rated to 3t axle load.
  • 15–22mm: Heavy industry, Olympic lifting, equestrian. Heavy plant and equipment.
  • 25–40mm: Playground safety surfacing (BS EN 1177 compliant). Impact attenuation rated.

Rubber Matting by Application

Gym & Fitness Rubber Flooring

Gym rubber flooring needs to absorb impact from dropped weights, handle rolling equipment, reduce noise, and survive high foot traffic. Standard commercial gyms use 10mm SBR roll matting throughout; Olympic lifting platforms require 20–40mm. The same rubber matting used by UK commercial gyms is available for home gym installations at competitive prices.

Workshop & garage floor rubber Matting

Domestic garages are well served by 6mm SBR studded or ribbed matting. If oil or fuel is present — vehicle maintenance, engine rebuilds — specify nitrile. Interlocking rubber tiles are popular for garages because they work around existing obstacles and can be removed when needed.

Industrial & Factory Rubber Matting

Industrial installations should specify minimum 10mm SBR for pedestrian areas, 15–22mm for forklift aisles. Anti-fatigue matting at standing workstations is recommended under HSE Manual Handling guidance. Our heavy-duty rubber matting is forklift-rated and used by NHS trusts, local authorities, and manufacturers across the UK.

Stable & Equestrian Matting

Stable mats are a welfare essential, not a luxury. At 17mm natural rubber, they insulate horses from cold concrete, reduce bedding requirements by up to 50%, prevent capped hocks, and can last 20+ years. The payback period on quality stable rubber matting — measured against bedding savings alone — is typically under 18 months.

Entrance & Commercial Matting

Entrance matting should extend at least 1.5m in the direction of travel. Ribbed or coir-backed rubber mats trap dirt and moisture before it reaches the interior floor — reducing cleaning costs and slip risk at building entries.

UK Compliance & Standards

All commercial rubber matting installations in the UK should reference:

  • DIN 51130: Slip resistance classification R9–R13. R10 minimum for wet commercial areas, R11+ for industrial kitchens and wash bays.
  • BS EN 1177:2018: Impact attenuation for playground safety surfacing. Mandatory for publicly accessible play areas.
  • HSE Workplace Regulations 1992: Floors must be suitable, in good condition, and free from obstruction. Anti-fatigue matting directly addresses HSE guidance on musculoskeletal injury prevention.

How to Buy Rubber Matting Online UK

When buying rubber matting online, confirm: compound (SBR/EPDM/nitrile), thickness, roll width, and whether you need cut-to-size lengths or fixed tiles. Most reputable UK suppliers will provide a technical specification sheet on request. Check that slip resistance ratings are stated on product pages — not all suppliers provide this information. Free delivery is standard from most UK rubber matting specialists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rubber matting safe for food preparation areas?

Standard SBR rubber matting is not food-safe. Food production areas require FDA/EC 1935/2004 compliant compounds. Contact us to specify the correct food-safe rubber matting for commercial kitchens and food processing environments.

Can I lay rubber matting over existing tiles or carpet?

Rubber matting can be laid over hard, flat, clean floors including existing tiles. It should not be laid over carpet — the instability of the carpet backing causes the mat to walk and creates a slip hazard. For carpet areas, use non-slip matting with a carpet-grip underside.

How do I stop rubber matting from smelling?

New SBR rubber has a characteristic odour that dissipates within 1–4 weeks with good ventilation. Unroll and air outdoors for 48–72 hours before installation in enclosed spaces to accelerate off-gassing.

What is the difference between rubber matting and rubber flooring?

The terms are often used interchangeably. "Rubber matting" typically refers to rolls or individual mats; "rubber flooring" often implies a more permanent, full-room installation. Both refer to the same range of vulcanised rubber products available in our rubber matting collection.

Is free delivery available on rubber matting orders?

Yes — we offer free UK delivery on all orders, with no minimum spend. Orders placed before 2pm are dispatched the same working day for next-day delivery to most UK mainland addresses.
